MENHIRS...the foreground one is shaped unusually. Wonder why ?

The word megalith has stemmed from the merger of two Greek terms of "mega" meaning large and "lithic" signifying stone.

Presently the megalithic tribes of India use various structures of stone as burials or memorials of the dead. However in the past megaliths were not only sepulchral/funerary structures but were also used both as memorials of the dead and to commemorate various events of the family and that of the community. Megaliths were found even to be used as boundary markers and also as astronomical structures.

Each passing day numerous ancient megaliths get destroyed in India and we have no record of this disaster. It is sad that no government agencies like the ASI, the State Archaeological Depts and the District Administrations demonstrate any interest in their protection perhaps for their tribal origin and also possibly because megaliths to them do not appear to be significant relics of our land.

In actuality prehistoric megaliths are a significant source of our ancient history and their preservation is imperative as these monuments are evidences that India was indeed a land of the tribals in hoary times. A few of them however suggests that astronomy and geometry was known to the megalithic tribals millennias prior to the emergence of the Brahmanical astronomer/mathematicians. Obliteration of prehistoric megaliths is bound to erase this verity.

Come let’s celebrate megaliths…

The amazing megaliths of   Chano (Rola)

The Rola megaliths look so tiny and insignificant. This is a very primitive burial. Although the site has not been excavated but the assumption of the date can be fixed from the fact that as it is a Mundaric Sasandiri which is still raised today by them tends to be a little different from this one. The Mundas themselves claim that they had quit making such burials thousands of years ago.Besides the finds of Black and red pottery in-situ from the surface reveals that this site must have built in the very archaic times.

But Rola is stunning is many other ways as the primitive burial is a testimony that megaliths apart from being burials or memorial of the dead, also had penchant towards astronomy. Each stone here has been positioned aligned to major sunrises and sets or aligned to major peaks of the encircling hills.

The the small triangle in  Chano (Rola) indicates the rising sun on the Winter Solstice mornings

The tiny triangle in the site is infact a pointer which has been positioned to point towards 120 deg South of East which is the azimuth of the Winter Solstice at this latitude.
Therefore on the Winter Solstice morning of 21st Dec the the sun was seen rising towards the direction of the apex of the smallest trinagle of Rola.

Even on the sunset on that day I found two stones to be aligned towards 300 deg North of West the azimuth of the sunset of Winter Soltice day. The sun was seen setting exactly on this line (view the pic).

The sunset on the Winer Solstice day in Chano (Rola). These two stone are aligned towards 300 deg North of West; the bearing of the Winter Solstice sunset.

Megalithic complexes  like those of Rola in Jharkhand, India are testimony of the fact that Astronomy and Mathematics were prerequisites for megalith building in hoary antiquity. And also that Astronomy and Mathematics were known to tribals prior to the advent of Brahmanical Astronomer /Mathematicans like Bodhayan, Aryabhatta and Varahamihira.
Time is therefore ripe to change our notions towards these unfortunate stones and begin to regard and venerate  them as sources of our country's prehistory and even history.

What an informative blog on megaliths, i was just trying to understand megaliths, but here you have created a library.Your discovery on Rola's astronomy should go a long way.
Surjo Maiti

Among the many things these tell us, they also tell us, our tribals if anything, were not dumb as some make it sound.
They related to nature well. Tried to understand nature and live with nature.
Astronomy and these megaliths are just, one part of this knowledge.

These enhance our respect for the simple native people of this world.
